Seventeen years after the birth of the first shaman heralded the coming of a new era, and fifteen years after a brutal war erupted with the barbarian kingdom of Myrantia over their refusal to hand over the shamans born within their borders, the first class of shamans is finally due to graduate from the Academy. Though the existing mages have attempted to learn the shamanic magic, only a few have gained the expertise that the shamans will have. Arch mage Rodsmic has worked hard to rebuild Kildaga after the treasonous actions of the past two arch mages and is looking forward to a peaceful transition from the Age of Mages to the Age of Shamans.

The arch mage’s hopes are shattered when a Kildagan outpost on the barbarian continent of Darmira is attacked and the mages and warriors stationed there disappear. At the same time, a mysterious storm besieges the Kildagan capital city of Gryzchek.  Ryken, the high commander of the warrior class, is sent to the Barbaric Kingdom of Myrantia to find out what has become of his countrymen.

The commander soon starts to suspect that the storm and the attack are connected, and the Kildagans learn that they are facing the two things they fear most in the world: witchcraft and sorcery. Ryken will stop at nothing to defeat the dark barbarian magic, battling the council, the mages of his expedition, and even his own conscience.
